What this means for product design

Just like Netflix did when it came to investing in and making decisions around House of Cards, when it comes to the products and services we work on and the decisions that guide what we do and don’t do, we have to look at data holistically across the whole system rather than fall down the trap of looking at just reactionary data in relation to a subset of what we’re testing. As Wernick pointed out, we should also include industry expertise to help get to the right insight and ensure we make the right strategic decisions.

With the right insight and the right decision making around it, data has the potential to improve both the bottom line for the business and the experience for users by providing more of what the user is interested in and less of what they’d prefer not to see. We’ll explore and cover more about the importance and implications of data in product design in Chapter 15 - Telling the right story behind data.
